Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the questions that we are asked most often about Group EMDR. If you’ve got a query that isn’t answered here, please contact us at kapitiemdr@gmail.com.
We can run a group with up to 10 participants.
Each group goes for three sessions, consisting of 2 hours per session. There are three facilitators for the process.

Group EMDR has been shown to reduce distress and PTSD symptoms from a recent or historical traumatic event. In addition to EMDR, participants will also gain grounding and stabilisation techniques to take into future challenging situations.

While it may take 8-12 individual EMDR sessions for one traumatic event to be reprocessed, the intensive-style longer group sessions allow for an accelerated process over 3 group sessions.

The group EMDR process is set up so that each participant can process a traumatic event separately and confidentially. Each participant may be reprocessing a completely individual event, and the other participants do not know what others are reprocessing. There is no sharing of trauma event information in our groups.
We are running fully subsidized groups for survivors of sexual trauma with ACC. Self-funded option may be available on request.

Our Part One groups focus on stabilisation, grounding and preparation for two reprocessing sessions.

Our Part Two groups consist of two reprocessing sessions and a future-focussed session to prepare you for future challenges, and building resilience and confidence in your strengths and resources.

You are welcome to participate in as many groups as you feel you need. Many participants only need to attend one or two groups, but some participants find that coming regularly helps build resilience and improves their quality of life as well as reducing distress and PTSD symptoms.
Participants will have completed at least one Part One group before attending a Part Two group. Some participants benefit from reprocessing multiple trauma events before moving to our future-focussed Part Two group.
There are two therapists co-facilitating the group process and a third therapist on hand to provide 1:1 support if needed. All ACC participants require a therapist for weekly sessions while the group is underway, for additional support. For self-funded participants, we require that you either have a therapist or contact with your GP if required during the group programme.

There is an online option by prior approval. Please contact Group EMDR Aotearoa to inquire.

We recommend that participants are able to self-soothe by using basic grounding techniques (e.g. deep breathing, going for a walk, mindfulness). If you are self-funded we recommend that you have a therapist or can refer back to your GP for additional support if needed during the programme. If you are an ACC-funded participant, we require that you have a current weekly therapist.

We can run groups for organisations, schools, family/whānau or small private groups. If your whānau has had a recent trauma event, or at your workplace or school, we may be able to help. Please contact us to inquire further.
